This compilation was created using a digitized version of the 2003 1:500,000 statewide bedrock geology map of Missouri as a foundation. The geology presented was updated from the 2003 map by including revisions from recent mapping along the eastern half of the Interstate 70 and Missouri River corridor and Lake of the Ozarks regions by the Missouri Geological Survey and in the south-central part of the state by the United States Geological Survey. Recent mapping by students and staff of Missouri State University and University of Missouri at Kansas City was also included. Modifications were made to geology in Crawford, Lincoln, McDonald, Pike, Randolph and Saline counties based on review of older mapping and well log information. Better spatial control for Precambrian outcrop areas was incorporated. Minor errors on the 2003 map in Cedar, Lincoln, Linn, Pike and St. Clair counties were corrected. Revisions to stratigraphic nomenclature are recognized; particularly noticeable is the change in Cenozoic nomenclature. Updated Chesterian/Meramecian contact locations in the St. Louis area are reflected. Revision in the age of the Bushberg Sandstone is manifested in wider distribution of Devonian in the St. Louis area as compared to previous Missouri state geologic maps. The name of the oldest Pennsylvanian units throughout the Northern and Southern Fire Clay districts in east-central Missouri was revised to “Basal Pennsylvanian” to reflect similarity of the deposits as well as uncertainty of their age. Following are editing notes:
Edits to 500k geologic map of Missouri
Some revisions of the bedrock geology layer had been done prior to this project. They are listed here.
11-06-06 Caplinger Mills Quadrangle (corrected distribution of Ocj in floodplain)
12-15-06 Briar, Poyner, Doniphan North, Doniphan South, Flatwoods, Oxly (edited distribution of Ocj to reflect recent mapping)
08-30-07 Bagnell Quad (Cep only), changed Pd to Pp on Eversonville and Linneaus (a correction)
09-03-07 Knobby, Boyler’s Mill and Rocky Mount, Gravois Mills quads (added recent 7.5’ mapping.)
At some time, the Osp and Ocj on Luckett Ridge quad (Cap a Gris structure) was added per QU4901.
Edits for 2017 1:500,000 statewide map -
Added 1:100,000 compilations for Festus, St. Louis, Fulton 30X60 areas. The Mk in the Festus and St. Louis areas on older version of this map is represented by the Bushberg Sandstone, which is now considered to be Devonian. The relatively thin unit was enhanced by buffering the outcrop pattern on the Festus and St. Louis 30X60 areas.
Added 1:100,000 compilation for Spring Valley and West Plains 30X60 areas (new USGS map).
Reattributed large Ospe poly in northern Lincoln and southern Pike counties to Odp per QU5501. (a correction)
Used Dave B’s Precambrian layer to update extent of Precambrian.
Edited Gasconade Co contacts around Cuba Fault to reflect SL2307
Edited Saline County to better reflect MO6701 but kept the Pc/Pka contact shown on previous map because MO6701 does not split these two. Minor editing of that contact.
Added Pleasanton area in Moberly 30X60 from Vol 11, map 5. The one well log present in this area supports Pleasanton presence here, too.
Added Devonian in Lincoln and Pikes counties per RI-22, plate 1 and Vol 8, pocket map.
Used outcrop information to split the Desmoinesian into “Basal Pennsylvanian” and Cabaniss and Marmaton in eastern Fulton and western St. Louis 30X60 areas.
Browns 7.5’ quad – added Devonian that Fletcher shows on his mapping for Browns and did some editing of Pm/Pc contact in that area to better match Fletcher’s mapping.
Jane 7.5’ mapping – edited outcrop patterns to better match recent mapping and added structures.
Divided Tertiary into Paleogene and Neogene systems to conform to current ICS terminology. Mounds Gravel in SE Mo is the only unit indicated as Neogene. (USGS refers to Paleogene and Neogene as subsystems, so which terminology to use?)
Divided Ospe into Ospe and Osp. (Everton only present in SE Mo.)
Divided Ojd into Oj and Ojd. (Dutchtown only present in SE Mo.)
Reattributed Pu to Pbf (Basal Pennsylvanian).
Shifted Pp and Pkc polys to the west-southwest in the vicinity of Odessa per MO6003 and to better match topography
Freeburg – edited Or/Og contact to follow river
Structures – began with structures from 2003 map. Edited Leasburg Fault to better match SL2202 and SL2203. Removed structures shorter than 100m. I removed structures shorter than 500m but preserved them in a separate feature class. Removed all synclines, anticlines, sinks, oil and gas fields, monoclines. Added Rock Creek Fault. Edited Cuba Fault to better reflect SL2307. Added Tombs Hollow Structural area. Added USGS Spring Valley/West Plains faults except those of Ftype=”magnetic”. Eliminated shorter segments in clusters of faults. Added structures from Scott City mapping. Added structures from St. Louis area mapping. Removed structures that are no longer in the “Structures” layer on the server
7/24/2015 Reclassified Ste. Genevieve in St. Louis and Festus 30X60 areas as Chester.
08/28/2015
Added Jefferson City STATEMAP work to date. Eliminated some small outcrop areas of Pbf, Mo and Osp. Used buffer to enhance some of the Osp outcrops.
11/16/2015
Removed the structures attributed to Mo8101 because there is no offset indicated at this scale.
03/03/2016
Added Chester and Devonian near Seneca and Southwest City as shown on USGS Professional Paper 588 plate 2.
09/15/2016 Revised map to include St. Louis and southeast-Missouri Warsaw Formation in Osagean Stage. Areas indicated as Meramecian in southwest, central and northeast Missouri include all of the Warsaw, which may be Meramecian, Osagean or both.
