This data set shows the monitoring locations of trained Volunteer Water Quality Monitors. A monitoring site is considered to be a 300 foot section of stream channel. If possible, a riffle should be present within the site. There are four levels of training for the Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring program, Introductory, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3. Introductory level monitors collect data on macroinvertebrates, stream discharge, and temperature. Level 1 monitors do all the previous monitoring and also monitor for dissolved oxygen, turbidity, nitrates, pH, and conductivity. Level 2 monitors complete additional quality assurance/quality control training to improve chemical and macroinvertebrate monitoring techniques. Depending on conditions, they may also monitor for one or more of the following: phosphates, ammonia, hardness, alkalinity and chloride. Level 3 monitors undergo stringent quality control assessment to ensure the most accurate data possible with the equipment provided.
This data is used to provide background information on wadeable streams. Many agencies and municipalities request volunteer generated data for planning and zoning purposes. Once the volunteer reaches the quality assurance/quality control of the Level 2 monitor, their data is used by the Department of Natural Resources and given the same credence as agency collected data. Some of this data is then used to facilitate water quality based watershed planning, total maximum daily load (TMDL) development, to produce Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) required 305(b) reports, and in the development of the 303(d) list.
The metadata content associated with this data set was reviewed by Elizabeth Retherford on 20090916. The metadata content review is intended to ensure that all of the required content is present. The components comprising the metadata document were reviewed by Elizabeth Retherford on 20090916. The metadata component review is intended to ensure that required metadata components are consistent and understandable to data consumers.

1) All data was queried from the Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring database to an excel file.
2) The excel file was then manipulated in Microsoft Excel. Formatting was applied to each column. The file was searched for inaccuracies, such as column misplacement or any obvious errors. The file was then saved as a dbase file.
3) Resulting dBase file is used to create XY data in ArcCatalog. Data was then reprojected using the spatial reference of North American Datum (NAD) 83, Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 15 North.
