This data set contains the boundaries of official special well drilling areas located in the State of Missouri.
The purpose of the Water Well Drillers Act, section 256.600 to 256.640 Missouri Revised Statutes, and the regulations written to enforce this statute, is to establish standards that will protect Missouri's groundwater. The quality of groundwater in Missouri varies considerably across the state. Some areas have abundant, high quality groundwater while wells in other areas have natural highly mineralized or muddy water. In some areas of Missouri, pre-existing land use and other practices, such as waste disposal, have contaminated the aquifer. Because of the variability of groundwater quality in Missouri, these regulations can not guarantee that water produced from a properly constructed well will be of usable quality. The well construction regulations are designed to ensure that contamination from the surface is not entering the subsurface from an improperly constructed well. These regulations establish minimum specifications for well construction. In certain cases, more casing and grout may be necessary. Experienced permitted drillers and pump installers should be able to determine when more stringent construction will be necessary.

This data set contains special well drilling areas for the State of Missouri.
The accuracy of this data set varies based on the coverage used for the heads up digitizing. Drilling areas that follow county boundaries have an accuracy of 5.2 meters. When roads were used as a base the accuracy varies based on the method used by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MODOT) to create the roads data set.

1. Special well drilling areas were heads-up digitized using the Center for Agricultural, Resource and Environmental System's 1:24,000 county boundary file as a base layer. The Missouri Department of Transportation's 2005 roadway coverage was used to heads up-digitize the well drilling areas that follow specific roads. The well drilling area boundaries are described in the Missouri Department of Natural Resources Miscellaneous Publication No. 50.

TYPE_AREA
Well drilling area name.
Area 1
Limestone or dolomite bedrock areas requiring a minimum of 80 feet of casing.
Area 2
Limestone and shale bedrock areas requiring a minimum of 40 feet of casing.
Area 3
Areas with glacial drift overlying bedrock; a minimum of 20 feet of casing is required in glacial drift wells and a minimum of 40 feet of casing in bedrock wells.
Area 4
Areas with glacial drift overlying bedrock; limestone bedrock areas requiring a minimum of 40 feet of casing.
Area 5
Areas with unconsolidated material overlying bedrock; a minimum of 20 feet of casing is required in unconsolidated material wells and a minimum of 80 feet of casing in bedrock wells.
Area 6
Granitic bedrock areas requiring a minimum of 40 feet or 80 feet of casing depending on the depth to granitic bedrock.
Sensitive Area A
Areas with Pennsylvanian Age sediments; 150 feet of casing is required at the sites having such sediments, otherwise 80 feet of casing is required.
