Routes represent a single linear feature, such as a city street or highway. Routes are linear features composed of one or more arcs or parts of an arc; for example, a highway may be composed of a number of connected arcs. A route, for linear referencing purposes, is simply a linear feature with measure values attached to it. Each route, at minimum, has an associated measurement system consisting of a route identifier, a measurement value along the route. The measures are used to locate data that describe parts of the route. Event data can represent point or range data. Point events are locations (an accident, a sign, or a culvert) somewhere along a route at a single measure (log mile, mile post). Linear or range events (functional classification, pavement condition, pavement type) extend along a route that starts at a measure and ends at another measure.
Generally used for coarse geographic and environmental analysis. Linear referencing is used to reference specific data or events (accidents, pavement type, speed limit, signage, etc.) to locations along a route or travelway, allowing more specific analysis or modeling.

IS, US, MO, and RT designated travelways originated from 1980-DIME data, which was later updated with 1995 TIGER files from the US Census Bureau. Currently the feature class is updated approximately quarterly utilizing design plans, GPS, aerial imagery and county/city maps. All Census related fields have been removed, as they are not utilized nor updated by MoDOT. As of January 2006, all state route linework was matched to NAIP 2005 imagery. Although all data in this data set have been compiled by the Missouri Department of Transportation, no warranty, expressed or implied, is made by the department as to the accuracy of the data and related materials.

NAME
Roadway Name
DESG
A designation is a two or three letter code used to identify the type of travelway. IS - Interstate; US - US Numbered Routes; MO - Missouri Numbered Routes; AL - Alternate Routes; RT - Missouri Lettered Routes; LP - Business Loop (Interstate); BU - Business Loop (non-interstate); SP - Spur; RV - Reversible; OR - Outer Road; CST - City Street; CRD - County Road; RP - Ramp (non-at-grade intersection); CO - Connector for Wye Leg and other at-grade connections; RA - Rest Area; WS - Weigh Station; NFS - National Forest Service; NPS - National Park Service; FWS - Fish and Wildlife Service; COE - Corps of Engineers; DOD - Department of Defense (Army, Air Force, etc.); ALY - Alley*; PVT - Private Road*; RR - Railroad (generic); PED- Pedestrian/Bicycle facility*; PK - Park Road (MoDNR and MDC roads only). Designations are listed in hierarchical order. *Used for special needs only. Not all such roads are included.
DIRECTION
Direction indicates the direction of travel on a travelway (S,N,E,W). Each direction of a roadway constitutes a travelway. Thus, a road that runs north and south will consist of two travelways ? one for the northbound lanes and one for the southbound lanes. This is true for both divided and undivided roadways. Direction of travel on state maintained facilities (state-system) is defined by the route or travelway number; EVEN numbered travelways are designated as East/West and ODD numbered travelways are designated as North/South.
OFFSET
Applies only to Outer Roads - the offset direction is determined by the parent route. If parent direction is North/South the offset direction is East/West, and for parent routes which are East/West, the offset would be North/South.
FULL_NAME
Concatenated DESG, NAME, and DIRECTION (Route Designation, Route Name, Direction, and Offset for outer roads).
